LEIMM™Lean Environmental Impact Mapping and Mitigation

Also referred to in the vernacular as Green Lean, LEIMM™ is EZSigma ‘s proprietary Lean methodology as it applies to the identification and management of inputs and outputs having local and external ecological consequences. An extension of conventional Value Stream Mapping, LEIMM is designed to isolate, quantify and mitigate the environmental impact of any service, administrative or operational process.

Starting and ending with the consumer of services and products, the “closed loop” topology of current and future state Value Stream Mapping, is ideally suited to the identification of environmental sensitive inputs and outputs.

Further, EZSigma utilizes technology driven, certified algorithms to quantify indirect CO2 impacts, with the scientific rigor required to pass the scrutiny of formal Eco-audits. Audit-able results are the cornerstone of any Green Lean initiative, and indeed are necessary for compliance with the “C” (for Control) in the DMAIC Lean Six Sigma model.

LEIMM also extends Lean standards of practice by taking proven value stream concepts such as “hidden factory”, an invaluable diagnostic tool that distinguishes between necessary and unnecessary waste, and supplementing it with that of “Hidden Emitter™”.

LEIMM targets several of the eight wastes, particularly overproduction, re-work, motion and inventory. Its scope is broad, and in addition to the obvious benefits of reduced energy, water and materials consumption, encompasses VOCs (volatile organic compounds such as paints, solvents, chlorofluorocarbons, formaldehyde, nitrogen)and electromagnetic radiation.

Initially it was considered that competitive and commercial pressure like contractual provisions and procurement guidelines were driving implementation of ISO 14001 EMS. However, organizations have realized that customer and supplier demand is only one variable.
